About BUDECO
The Busega Development Community (BUDECO) — Jumuiya ya Maendeleo ya Wanabusega — is a registered non-governmental organisation founded to connect, unite, and empower all people of Busega origin, wherever they live.
Born from a gathering of Busega diaspora on 23 June 2012 at Dar es Salaam, BUDECO was formally established on 23 March 2013. It is non-political, non-religious, and non-tribal — owned and governed entirely by its members through democratic organs.
BUDECO's overarching purpose is to strengthen solidarity, advance socio-economic development, and preserve the cultural heritage of the Busega community for generations to come.

A Strategic Crossroads

Connected by Road
Two major paved national trunk roads cross the district: the Mwanza–Musoma Highway (T4) running south to north, and the T36 Highway linking Shinyanga and Mara Regions. The town of Lamadi serves as a regional commerce junction where both roads diverge.
Rich Natural Endowment
Fertile soils, abundant Lake Victoria fisheries, rich pastures for livestock, and remarkable biodiversity position Busega as a district of enormous untapped potential — for agriculture, tourism, trade, and sustainable community development.

Culture & Community
Rooted in the proud traditions of the Sukuma — Tanzania's largest and most vibrant ethnic community
The Sukuma People
Busega is home to the Sukuma — Tanzania's largest ethnic group, numbering over 5.5 million people across the Lake Victoria basin. A Bantu-speaking people of the savannah, the Sukuma are celebrated for their community spirit, rich artistic tradition, and deep connection to the land.
Music & Dance
Vibrant drumming and communal dance mark every Sukuma celebration — harvests, weddings, and seasonal festivals — carrying joy and identity through every generation.
Community Spirit
The concept of ujamaa — communal brotherhood — is woven deeply into Busega's social fabric. Neighbours share resources, labour, and support through every season of life.
Pastoral Heritage
Cattle-keeping holds deep cultural significance for the Sukuma — representing wealth, status, and spiritual connection alongside fishing, farming, and modern enterprise.
Herbal Knowledge
The Sukuma of Busega possess a rich tradition of natural medicine — over 42 animal and plant species used in time-honoured healing practices, respected alongside modern healthcare.
Elder Governance
Respected community elders guide village affairs, mediate disputes, and preserve cultural observances — forming a vital layer of wisdom alongside formal local government.
Social Values
Respect, honesty, family cohesion, and communal responsibility are the cornerstone values of Busega. BUDECO enshrines these in its constitution, ensuring development stays community-centred.
Economic Activities
Tanzania's best-kept economic secret — rich in natural resources and untapped potential
Fishing & Aquaculture
Lake Victoria's northern shore makes Busega one of Simiyu's primary fishing locations. Nile perch and tilapia sustain communities and supply export markets. Fish farming is a rapidly growing sector.
Agriculture & Livestock
Fertile soils support cotton, maize, sorghum and sunflower farming. The district hosts an Agriculture & Livestock Training Centre serving 200 students annually. Cattle, goats and sheep drive the rural economy.
Tourism & Hospitality
With Serengeti's Ndabaka Gate at its doorstep, Busega's northern corridor hosts growing safari lodges. The region is a "blank canvas" — offering early-mover advantage in eco-lodges and cultural tourism.
Trade & Commerce
The junction of trunk roads T4 and T36 makes Lamadi a regional commerce hub. Cross-regional trade between Mwanza, Musoma, Shinyanga and Mara Regions flows through Busega.
Beekeeping & Honey
The natural savannah ecosystem of Busega provides excellent conditions for beekeeping. Honey, beeswax and propolis all command premium prices, making this an accessible and profitable rural livelihood.
SMEs & Entrepreneurship
BUDECO's Finance & Education Committee trains members in business management. Women and youth are specifically prioritised — building economic independence across Busega households.
